Pirates' rakes in the loot
LOS ANGELES, May 27 (UPI) -- "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" provided its U.S. makers with buried treasure-like bounty, pulling in an estimated $112.55 million as of Sunday.
With the long Memorial Day weekend still going strong, "Shrek the Third," which was No. 1 last week, slipped to No. 2 with $51.04 million. "Spiderman 3" also was down a notch to third with $13.7 million as Disney's block-buster "Pirates" sequel pillaged most of the loot.
"Bug" debuted at No. 4 with $3.26 million in ticket sales, Box Office Mojo reported Sunday.
"Georgia Rule" and "Disturbia" each were bumped down a spot, to fifth and sixth places with $1.86 million and $1.76 million in sales respectively.
Rounding out the Top 10 so far this weekend were "Wildhogs" at $1.1 million, "Away from Her" at $780,000, "The Invisible" $603,000 and "Blades of Glory" $505,000.
Bounced out were "28 Weeks Later," "Fracture," "Delta Farce," "Hot Fuzz" and "Waitress."
Industry watchers were anticipating the full weekend's receipts likely will surpass the $247.6 million generated during the 2004 Memorial Day time frame -- the biggest weekend of all time.
'Pirates' finds box-office gold
Swashbuckling sequel sails to fifth best opening ever

Last Update: 1:43 PM ET May 27, 2007
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The latest sequel to "Pirates of the Caribbean" scored the fifth-highest opening weekend in box-office history.
The third installment of the film series, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," raked in an estimated $112.5 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.
The movie was shown on a record number of big screens during Memorial Day weekend, opening in 4,362 U.S. theaters, the box-office tracker Media By Numbers calculated.
DIS, , ) $300 million to create. It stars Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom and was made by super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
Yet the buccaneering adventure -- touched with a twist of the supernatural -- failed to beat out earlier 2007 films "Spider-Man 3" and "Shrek the Third."
"Spider-Man 3" grossed $151.1 million in its opening weekend in early May, setting an all-time record.
And "Shrek" took in $121.6 million when the sophisticated cartoon opened last weekend - the third largest debut in box-office history.
The debut of "Pirates" might have been larger if not for preview sessions Thursday night. The movie generated about $14 million in sales that night.
'Pirates' fails to capsize Spidey
Grosses for the third in the Johnny Depp series are expected to total $126.5 million, breaking the holiday record but not that set by 'Spider-Man 3.'

"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" will make off with only a portion of Hollywood's box office records.
The Walt Disney Co. film was projected to have grossed $126.5 million in the U.S. and Canada through today, box-office tracker Media by Numbers reported.
That puts the film well short of the domestic weekend record of $151 million set by "Spider-Man 3" earlier this month.
"Spider-Man's" totals also came over just three days. "Pirates" in the comparable period grossed $112.5 million but supplemented its total with $14 million in special Thursday night "preview screenings."
Nonetheless, "Pirates" is easily breaking the industry's holiday weekend box office record.
That was set last Memorial Day weekend by "X-Men 3: The Last Stand," which grossed $122.9 million domestically in the Friday-through-Monday period.
In addition, Disney predicted "Pirates" would have the biggest global opening ever, passing "Spider-Man 3's" $381.7 million. The film was on track to gross $205.5 million in foreign markets through today.
Mark Zoradi, president of Disney's motion picture marketing and distribution, said that number was achieved even though "Pirates" has yet to open in China, India and Lebanon.
Although opening on more than 11,000 screens in a record 4,362 theaters, "Pirates' " length of nearly three hours limited the number of showings.
Zoradi noted that "Pirates" also has much stiffer competition, with "Shrek the Third" and "Spider-Man 3" still playing in theaters.
"We're not looking back at all and couldn't be happier," he said.
Critics also weren't kind to the film, although with summer action blockbusters, reviews typically have a limited effect at the box office.
"This is the kind of movie where reviews don't mean as much," Zoradi said. "Audiences voted with their ticket purchases. They clearly voted."
The weekend numbers for "Pirates" means the franchise's third installment will probably become one of the highest-grossing films of the year. "Pirates" stars Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow.
Complete holiday box-office totals will be released on Monday.
Pirates Reaches $332M Worldwide
Source: Walt Disney Studios May 27, 2007
Walt Disney Pictures' Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End continued on a wave of unprecedented success at the global box office over the weekend, and is poised to have the biggest worldwide opening of all time, it was announced today by Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Marketing and Distribution. Worldwide the movie has earned $332 million total in five days.
On the domestic front, "At World's End" will establish a new 4-day Memorial Day weekend record. The film's gross through Sunday is estimated to be $126.5 million, with the Monday holiday still to come. It is the Studio's 53rd film to reach the $100 million plateau, which is unprecedented in the industry.
At the international box office "At World's End" is on track to gross a record-setting $205.5 million thru Sunday, and has already become the Studio's 54th release to join the $100 million club. The film has a few major markets yet to open including China and India.
Commenting on the announcement, Zoradi said, "Audiences all over the world are clearly having a blast with this latest 'Pirates' adventure and we're thrilled to report that the film is on track to have the biggest worldwide opening in movie history. From every corner of the world, the film is playing like gangbusters, and we think that this enthusiasm and good will is going to continue for a long time to come."

(AP) HOLLYWOOD, Calif. Johnny Depp and his pirate friends pulled in a lot of plunder, but fell far short of a record opening day.
"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" raked in $43 million domestically Friday, well behind the $59.3 million opening day for "Spider-Man 3" just three weeks earlier, according to studio estimates Saturday.
The numbers for "At World's End" were skewed somewhat because the Walt Disney Co. had preview screenings at about 3,000 theaters Thursday night in advance of the movie's official Friday release.
The movie pulled in $14 million at those screenings, putting its domestic total at $57 million in just over a day. Without the Thursday screenings, much of that business would have been done on Friday instead, putting "At World's End" in range of the top single-day grosses.
"Spider-Man 3," released by Sony Corp., had broken the single-day box-office record of $55.8 million set last July by "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," part two in the action-comedy franchise starring Depp as boozy buccaneer Jack Sparrow.
"Making $57 million in a day and a half is not bad for a bunch of pirates," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "Had all those preview numbers been folded into Friday, it would have maybe been the second-biggest single day in history."
"At World's End" also grossed $44.4 million Friday in 102 international markets. That put its worldwide total at $142.5 million since it began rolling out overseas Wednesday.
Despite opening in a record 4,362 theaters, "At World's End" is unlikely to break the all-time high for a three-day weekend, also held by "Spider-Man 3" with $151.1 million, said Chuck Viane, Disney head of distribution.
"Spider-Man 3" snatched the record away from the "Pirates" franchise, which had set a new high of $135.6 million with "Dead Man's Chest."
Viane said the record Disney aimed for is best four-day Memorial Day weekend debut. That record is held by last year's "X-Men: The Last Stand" with $122.9 million.
"At World's End" has a shot at that mark if it maintains its Friday momentum.
"Today's date is what matters," Viane said Saturday. "What matters to me now is how is it going to do today?"
The length of "At World's End" -- two hours, 47 minutes, nearly half an hour longer than "Spider-Man 3" -- is a factor, limiting the number of screenings theaters can squeeze in each day.
Reviews for "At World's End" were mixed at best, though the same was true for "Dead Man's Chest" and other recent
blockbusters including "Spider-Man 3" and "Shrek the Third."
"We always have this disparity between the critics and the commercial," Viane said. "People just love the idea of Johnny as this character and the whole premise of the trilogy coming to an end."
"At World's End," whose Caribbean portions were shot at the same time as "Dead Man's Chest," picks up where the second movie left off, with Depp's Sparrow consigned to Davy Jones' locker and old allies and enemies (Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom and Geoffrey Rush) embarking on a voyage to save him.

'Pirates' sails to $112.5 million debut, misses box-office record
Associated Press - May 27, 2007 2:14 PM ET
LOS ANGELES (AP) - The third installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean" took in $$112.5 million this weekend. The amount is well below last summer's opening for its predecessor.
"Dead Man's Chest" last year hauled in $$135.6 million during its opening weekend.
Adding in $$14 million from Thursday night preview screenings, "At World's End" had taken in $$126.5 million domestically.
"At World's End" holds the fifth-biggest 3-day opening ever. It was outperformed by this month's "Spider-Man 3" and "Shrek the Third."
After 2003's acclaimed "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," reviews were mixed at best for both sequels.
Released just ten months after "Dead Man's Chest," the new movie picks up from that cliffhanger as Captain Jack Sparrow's friends and foes set sail to rescue him from Davy Jones' locker.

"Pirates of the Caribbean" sequel tops weekend box office 1 hour, 15 minutes ago
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Despite being nearly three hours long, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" took first place on its opening weekend with 126.5 million dollars at the North American box-office, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The movie, the last in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy and starring Johnny Depp and Keira Knightly, more than doubled the 51 million dollars raked in by last week's leader, "Shrek the Third" -- another of a series of blockbuster sequels, box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations said.
"At World's End" however fell short of the 135.6 million dollars of its predecessor "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." The Shrek franchise with Mike Myers returning to provide the voice of the ogre, summed 201.4 million dollars in world-wide box office returns since its opening last week.
The Marvel comic book hero "Spider-Man 3" fell to third place with 13.7 million dollars Friday to Sunday at the North American box office. It has grossed 303.3 million since its opening on May 1.
"Bug," starring Ashely Judd, a lonely waitress who holes up in a spooky motel with a paranoid war veteran who sees insects everywhere, took fourth place at its opening weekend with 3.3 million dollars.
"Waitress," with Keri Russell starring as a pregnant waitress falling in love with a newcomer to town, raked in 3.1 million dollars, or fifth place.
In sixth place came another sequel, "28 Weeks Later," which follows up 2003 British zombie thriller "28 Days Later," which portrayed Britain being devastated by a deadly virus. "28 Weeks Later" earned 2.5 million in its third week in theaters.
Trailing was the Lindsay Lohan vehicle "Georgia Rule" with 1.86 million dollars; teen thriller "Disturbia" with 1.76 million; "Fracture" with 1.2 million; and "Wild Hogs" with 1.1 million.
Exhibitor Relations' figures estimate the top 12 films will gross 201.4 million dollars over the three-day Memorial Day weekend, 10.13 percent higher than the same three day weekend a year ago.
